Heart disease management . Cardiac
disease, which includes coronary artery disease (CAD) and congestive heart failure
(CHF), tops the list of the most serious health problems facing our country. According
to the American
Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer
of women and men and are among the top five most common chronic disabilities.
Going forward, the aging workforce could drive a three-fold increase in the prevalence
of heart disease among employees within the next 10 years.
For employers, particularly those with older workers, the costs of cardiac disease
are astronomical. The cost of a single CAD event is more than $52,000 for direct
hospitalization, medical costs and disability expenses. Multiply this by the number
of employees with heart disease – up to 10% of the total workforce – and
the impact to the bottom line becomes clear.

Cardium Health offers cardiac disease management programs for CAD and CHF. With a people-centered,
multi-disciplinary, and integrated
approach, we help individuals move from knowing what they should do to
improve their health to actually doing it.
Through telephonic counseling with a designated primary
health coach and specialty health
coaches as needed, participants learn about exercise and develop programs they can stick
with. They quit smoking – successfully. They learn how to make heart healthy
dietary choices. They find out how and why their drug therapies work, and about the importance
of medication compliance. Over time, their cholesterol and blood pressure levels go down.
They develop the knowledge and discipline to reduce their risks, stay healthy and productive,
and successfully manage their diseases every day.
