Understanding your options. People
know that early detection tests such as a colonoscopy after the age of 50 and a mammogram
after the age of 40 for women should be a part of their annual physicals. But too many
people don’t do what they should because of the fear of what they might find.
The Cardium Health cancer case management program helps people face their fears and
encourage knowing through education and doing through caring support.
We understand the emotional shock that comes with a cancer diagnosis. When doctors first
give patients the news, 40% of people don’t hear what is actually said. Many times,
patients are so overwhelmed and confused they can’t process or retain information.
Through one-on-one telephone counseling, cancer case managers work with participants
to communicate more effectively with their doctors. Through education, participants are
more prepared for their doctor visits and become more actively involved in their own
course of care.
Each cancer case managers works one-on-one with participants to educate them to be proactive
partners in their care. Participants learn the importance of taking their temperature,
monitoring their weight, keeping their appetites up, drinking enough fluids, eating a
high protein diet, and getting enough exercise to build red blood cell counts.
Together with participants’ physicians, the case managers coordinate discussions
to consider all high-quality options and allow participants and their medical providers
to make informed choices. Ultimately, when people understand the nature of their disease,
how their therapy works, and their treatment options, they become better self-advocates in their healthcare decisions.
